Hisham/Oscar
Hello there! Welcome to Fighting Failure, the podcast where we discuss solutions to the climate crisis! I’m Hisham - your host for today’s episode
And I’m Oscar, your co-host.
This episode is part two to a two part segment out of the urban expansion section on nature sports! How exciting.
As our populations grow, and our cities expand, there is an increased need to do stuff. ANYTHING. But lately, what are known as nature sports have taken the spotlight in a lot of the western world, and increasingly in the developing world.
Today we’ll try to cover sustainability and how to be more sustainable in sports from hiking to river swimming.
So let’s get into it!
🥾 Hiking Problems
- 🌱 Trampling grass or shrubbery, causing it to die, and making the path into a compacted soil, and basalt rock path that easily enables erosion...
- 🦋 ...this effects the animals and microbiomes in the area...
- 🛣️ This also encourages an increase in road networking to accommodate for the rural location of many of these spots. These roads can in-turn be a problem.
- ✈️ Additionally, the success of this industry encourages large-scale travel.
- 🚯 People littering or not respecting wildlife (as in any scenario)
- 🧼 On long, multiple-day trips, the use of detergents or soap in natural rivers can kill microbiomes in the water that aid in the maintenance of the fish population, leading to the demise of many fish, and concordantly, many predatory birds and other animals that are reliant on fish.
⛰️ Hiking Solutions
- 👣 Stay on track so that you do not trample extra vegetation
- 😺 Respect the animals you’re sharing the space with
- #️⃣ As in any case, with any nature sport, it’s generally better to #keepthingslocal!
- 🗑️ Don’t litter... and don’t use detergents in rivers/streams/lakes
- ↪️ Perhaps promote the rotation of open trails throughout the year, so that no trail is being too seriously eroded by the hikers.
