Problems

• Habitat Destruction:
  • Deforestation, etc.
• Ecosystem collapse
  • KEYSTONE SPECIES!!!
• Biodiversity loss:
  • Poaching, Extinction, Domestication
• Insect importance in Ecosystems:
  • Important parts in food webs
  • Feeding frogs, animals dependent on insects for food
  • Bees – pollination.
  • Termites – Recycling dead trees
• Insect Decline
  • Pesticides, habitat/ecosystem destruction, pollution, parasites, and pathogens – human activity!!
  • Bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, crickets declining.

Solutions

• Habitat restoration
  • Less meddling, leaving nature to its own devices
  • Just give nature time and space
• Repopulation of declining species.
  • More intrusive/meddling
• Undomestication?? – release back into wild…
  • Not really possible / not a thing
• Reduce pesticide use drastically
  • Links to agriculture section
• Increase protected areas to preserve existing ecosystems.
  • Especially Marine Protected Areas
